India's education minister has resigned, the first major concession by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government after weeks of protests by the Cockroach movement. Dharmendra Pradhan announced his resignation on X as police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators in New Delhi, sparking cheers among thousands. Authorities shut down internet and restricted access to 18 metro stations.

The protests began over a month ago demanding education reforms after medical entrance exam fraud. The movement's founder, 30-year-old Abhijeet Dipke, arrived from the US on July 5 and joined the protest, telling supporters, 'Cockroaches are not afraid and they don't die. The movement embraced the name after a judge called uneducated, unemployed youth engaged in activism or journalism cockroaches and parasites.
