The world's first mixed-wing body passenger plane is coming: Radical savings in fuel

US JetZero collaborated with Japan Airlines for the world's first mixed-wing fuselage commercial passenger aircraft, Z4. The company has also negotiated with Gulf Air for an undisclosed number of Z4s. The company is exhibiting the new aircraft at the Farnborough International Airshow, held in Hampshire, England, between 20-24 July. The Z4, which is planned to enter commercial service in the early 2030s and will provide 50 percent fuel savings, is aimed to carry approximately 250 passengers, offer a range of 5,000 nautical miles (approximately 9,260 kilometers) and provide fuel savings of up to 50 percent compared to existing commercial passenger aircraft.

Developed by JetZero, the Z4 has a mixed wing body design where the body and wings are combined on a single lifting surface. According to the company, this structure significantly reduces air resistance by enabling the entire aircraft to produce lift. This is where fuel efficiency comes from.

More efficient fuel consumption contributes to reducing both emissions and costs. Japan's leading airline company, Japan Airlines (JAL), also participated in the Z4 program. As part of the collaboration, JAL will contribute to shaping the aircraft's commercial design, operational processes and maintenance requirements.
