Man fires at officers in Nijmegen and shoots himself dead

A man died by suicide in Nijmegen on the night of Thursday to Friday after shooting at officers from a home. He died in hospital. On Thursday around 6 p.m., the police received a report from concerned family members that the man was missing, a spokesperson said.
Just before 10:30 p.m. it became clear that the man was in a house on Jacob van Campenstraat in Nijmegen. He showed confused behavior. Officers attempted to contact him to provide assistance, but around 11:45 p.m. he fired shots at police officers.
No one was injured. De-escalation for hours However, the situation was so unsafe that the Special Interventions Service (DSI) was called in. An ambulance and emergency services were also prepared for a crisis admission.
The DSI officers tried for hours to de-escalate the situation. They therefore only entered the house 2.5 hours later. Shortly before, the man had injured himself with a firearm.
He received first aid, but died from his injuries a few hours later.
