Pierce Is Sidelined Recovering From Ankle Surgery, Leaving Uncertainty at the Position

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen sees a hidden advantage in his wide receivers facing Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward daily in training camp. The Colts' receiver room has undergone major changes, with Michael Pittman Jr. and Adonai Mitchell gone, Alec Pierce signing a four-year, $116 million deal, and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Deion Burks joining. Pierce is sidelined recovering from ankle surgery, leaving uncertainty at the position.

Gardner and Ward have dominated early camp practices with their length. When you can go up against two of the best in the league in practice every day, it's going to make everybody better, Steichen said. Gardner, 24, arrived via a midseason trade that sent Mitchell and two first-round picks to the Jets, and he is the only cornerback in league history with first-team All-Pro honors in his first two seasons.

Ward earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors in 2023 with the 49ers after recording 72 tackles, 23 pass deflections, and five interceptions. He signed a three-year, $54 million deal with Indianapolis in March 2025 but missed most of last season due to concussions. Now healthy, the duo forms one of the league's best cornerback tandems, and Steichen believes the daily competition will strengthen the receiver room.
