Volyn Region Has Been Sentenced in Absentia to 15 Years in Prison, Ukraine's State Border Guard Service Reported

A Russian intelligence agent who attempted to recruit Ukrainian border guards in the Volyn region has been sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison, Ukraine's State Border Guard Service reported. The Lutsk City District Court found a 49-year-old native of the Luhansk region guilty of high treason under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code. The man, a former border guard who defected to Russia after abandoning his service, tried to build an agent network among Ukrainian border guards, including personnel from the Volyn Border Guard Detachment, seeking to persuade them to cooperate with Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and engage in intelligence and sabotage activities.

Ukrainian authorities detected and stopped his subversive activities in time, preventing information leaks. The court also ordered confiscation of all his property and stripped him of his military rank of junior sergeant.
