With the fourth heat wave arriving in Europe, the number and duration of these phenomena place the summer of 2026 already clearly above the average recorded in recent years. Lorenzo Giovannini, atmospheric physicist at the University of Trento, confirmed this to ANSA: "We are well above the average of past years, also with regards to temperatures".

Furthermore - he continues - this may not be the last wave: at the moment it is difficult to say, but it is reasonable to think that the high temperatures will continue also in the month of August. "The new high pressure field of subtropical origin advancing from North Africa will follow a trajectory that will fully affect Italy, as has already happened in the third heat wave, and the temperatures that will be reached should also be similar.

The African anticyclone "is moving from the South-West - states Giovannini - and it will reach Spain and southern France and then reach our peninsula. Temperatures will be high practically throughout Italy, but will deviate from seasonal averages especially in the Centre-North". Forecasts show that the new wave will continue at least until 7-8 August, but could extend even further.
