Rijkswaterstaat has installed the first cameras at the Merwedebrug to enforce a truck ban on the A27 bridge near Gorinchem, immediately issuing fines of €500 per truck or touringcar. The ban, in effect since last Saturday, was imposed due to structural weaknesses in the steel arch that compromise safety. Many truckers flouted the ban, with a reporter counting dozens in half an hour Monday morning.

Detection cameras were placed southbound last night and are operational; northbound cameras will be installed tonight. Meanwhile, drivers complain of unclear signage, especially for foreigners, and navigation systems still routing trucks over the bridge. Rijkswaterstaat acknowledges the issues and says it will improve roadside communication and consider multilingual options.
