A surge in foreign yacht visits is being reported in Tromsø and other Norwegian ports this summer, with harbor officials noting an unprecedented number of luxury vessels docked simultaneously. Tom-Eirik Nordstrand, maritime manager for Tromsø havn, observed that while yachts arrive annually, having five at once is exceptional. 'We have a feeling we've never had so many before, though I don't have the exact numbers right now, he said, highlighting a growing trend over recent years and what is likely to be a record season in 2025. Data from the Norwegian Coastal Administration confirms a steady increase since 2021, with 2025 figures through July 19 already approaching full-year totals from previous years.

The agency noted that a new regulation effective January 1, 2025, which lowered the reporting threshold from 24 to 15 meters, partly explains the rise. Among the yachts is the 'Atlas, owned by billionaire music and film producer David Geffen, co-founder of DreamWorks and founder of Geffen Records, which released recordings by Elton John, Guns N' Roses, and Cher. The 12-guest yacht, crewed by 24, features a sauna, spa, gym, and cinema.

It is available for charter at 11 million Norwegian kroner per week; it is unclear whether Geffen is aboard. Nordstrand joked about the temptation to upgrade his own boat, citing the sailor's 'three-footitis'—the urge to buy a vessel at least three feet longer—but acknowledged that such a purchase is beyond his salary.
