Suspect arrested for stealing 300 gold coins from currency exchange where he worked
A suspect who allegedly stole 300 full gold coins from a currency exchange office in Fatih, Istanbul, by taking advantage of a power outage has been arrested.
- The suspect, identified as İ.K., worked as a teller at the exchange.
- Police recovered 282 of the 300 stolen gold coins and 90,000 lira.

Police launched an investigation on July 22 after 300 full gold coins were stolen from a currency exchange in Fatih during a power outage. Through field research and technical surveillance, officers identified the suspect as İ.K., an employee working as a teller at the exchange, who exploited the blackout to commit the theft. The suspect was apprehended in an operation the following day, during which authorities recovered 282 full gold coins and 90,000 Turkish lira believed to be proceeds from the sale of some of the stolen items.
Further investigation revealed that İ.K. had previously stolen 100 grams of gold from the same workplace. In the latest theft, he had converted 18 of the stolen full gold coins into 100 grams at a jeweler and then returned that amount to the office, a sequence captured on security cameras. After completing police procedures, the suspect was referred to the courthouse.
