Fishermen drive over exposed phosphorus bomb, bomb ignites

Fishermen inadvertently triggered a phosphorus bomb after driving over it while towing their boat, causing the munition to catch fire.
- The bombs were exposed due to very low water levels in the Rhine.
- Phosphorus bombs are dangerous when dry but safe when wet.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening around 8:45 p.m. local time. The fishermen were transporting their boat on a trailer when they passed over the exposed munition, which had been revealed due to extremely low water levels in the Rhine River. They immediately called emergency services.
Police, firefighters, and an explosives expert responded and discovered a second phosphorus bomb near the burning one. Phosphorus is highly flammable and can spontaneously ignite upon contact with dry air, but remains stable when wet. Authorities cordoned off the area.
