The ancient olive oil workshop in Syedra was reconstructed

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that the restoration of the olive oil workshop, dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries AD, was completed with the work carried out within the scope of the Heritage to the Future Project in the Syedra Ancient City in Antalya. In his post on his NSosyal account, Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that another important stage of the work carried out in the Syedra Ancient City has been completed. Ersoy stated that the olive oil workshop located on the southwestern street of the ancient city was rebuilt and said: "With the work we carried out in the Syedra Ancient City within the scope of our Heritage to the Future Project, we completed the restoration of the olive oil workshop dating back to the 5th-6th century AD and revived it.
This important structure, which reflects the olive oil production technology of ancient times in a holistic way with its crushing stones, press system and liquid separation compartments, carries the thousands of years old traces of our production culture to the present day. I would like to thank all the employees of our General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, our excavation team, our scientists and everyone who contributed to this valuable study. We will continue to preserve the cultural heritage of Anatolia with determination and carry it to the future in the light of scientific data.
Many olive workshops were unearthed during the excavations carried out in the Ancient City of Syedra. The crushing stones, architectural arrangements of the press system and liquid separation compartments found in the workshops revealed that olive oil was produced in the city in accordance with ancient standards. In ancient times, olive oil was among the basic products used in lighting, medicine, cleaning and religious rituals, as well as in nutrition.
In the workshop located on Southwest Street, the production process, from the olive crushing stage to the collection of the oil, can be monitored in all its stages through the ruins. The olive oil workshop, which was unearthed during the 2024 excavations, was reorganized after restoration work was completed in 2025. The restoration stands out as one of the important examples that reveals the working principle of olive oil workshops in the city and the region.
