Turkey Selects 'Like a Felled Tree' for 99Th Academy Awards'

TRT co-production "Kesilmiş Bir Ağaç Gibi" (Like a Felled Tree) has been selected as Turkey's official entry for the 99th Academy Awards, set for March 2027. Directed by Tunç Davut, the film will compete in the Best International Feature category.
The film won the TRT Co-Production Award at 12 Punto 2019 and premiered at the 62nd Antalya Film Festival in October 2025, later screening at the 13th Boğaziçi Film Festival and the 36th Ankara Film Festival in November 2025, where it took the Best Editing prize. The story follows 70-year-old retired civil engineer Refik, who helps his Syrian caregiver Nesrin financially to travel to Europe with her two young children. During Eid al-Adha, Nesrin disappears, leaving the children with Refik.
Meanwhile, his son İhsan, a dairy trader on the brink of bankruptcy, tries to persuade his father and sister to fund a livestock farm on family land, while his daughter Nalan returns home from Istanbul, planning to move to Germany. Country submissions for the category close on September 30, 2026; the shortlist of 15 films will be announced on December 15, 2026, final nominees on January 21, 2027, and the ceremony is set for March 14, 2027.
