Watts's MCU Debut Reunites Her With Holland 14 Years After the Impossible, Where She Played His Mother

Naomi Watts revealed she secretly voiced E.V.I.E., Peter Parker's AI assistant, in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, marking her uncredited Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. The Oscar-nominated actor shared the news on Instagram, posting a behind-the-scenes photo from a remote recording session with director Destin Daniel Cretton. "From playing your mom to playing your AI (100 per cent human made), Watts wrote, congratulating Tom Holland and the team on the film's historic opening weekend.

The movie, directed by Cretton, follows Peter four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, living anonymously after Doctor Strange's spell erased knowledge of his identity. It stars Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. Watts's MCU debut reunites her with Holland 14 years after The Impossible, where she played his mother.

Holland recently called working with Watts "an acting masterclass, praising her patience and work ethic. Brand New Day, released on 31 July, opened to a record-breaking $360m in North America, overtaking Avengers: Endgame, and made $1bn worldwide in six days, with $1.05bn in global sales. The Independent's Clarisse Loughrey gave it four stars, calling it the best Spider-Man film since Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2.
