Another 11,500 Suspected Cases Await Confirmation or Further Investigation

Cyclospora cases continue to climb in several states, with Michigan and Ohio reporting sharp increases in recent days as part of a nationwide outbreak that has sickened thousands. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 6,707 laboratory-confirmed domestically acquired cases across 45 states since May 1, including 423 hospitalizations, as of July 28. That marks a jump of more than 2,500 cases from the agency's July 21 update. Another 11,500 suspected cases await confirmation or further investigation.

No deaths have been reported. The CDC is investigating multiple clusters, with the largest linked to shredded lettuce from Taylor Farms served at Taco Bell restaurants in several states. Taco Bell removed the lettuce on July 17, and Taylor Farms expanded a voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico shipped to 27 states.

Michigan reported 10,773 cases with 193 hospitalizations, adding 1,373 cases since July 27. Ohio reported 4,013 cases as of July 25, up from 2,576 on July 23. North Carolina logged 718 cases, including 24 hospitalizations, with 157 new cases since July 21. Missouri reported 593 cases as of July 26, more than double the 216 cases a week earlier. Florida had 254 cases as of July 25, up from 158 on July 18. Iowa reported 226 lab-confirmed cases, with 47 linked to international travel. Virginia reported 162 cases as of July 23, with 66 domestically acquired.

Cyclospora, a parasite spread through contaminated produce, causes intestinal illness with frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements.
