Investors and analysts questioned the need for a transformative acquisition by the U.K.'s biggest drugmaker despite potential financial benefits. Bristol Myers shares rose about 5% in U.S. premarket trading. Jefferies analyst Michael Leuchten called a potential deal "more than a head scratcher" in an investor note.
Separately, Amgen disclosed that hackers stole company data and patient health information in a cybersecurity incident involving cloud storage systems run by third-party providers, according. The company determined the incident was material on July 29, based on the number of files affected and the potential sensitivity of the data, a regulatory filing said. Amgen has not found any impact on its products, manufacturing operations, financial reporting systems, or ability to meet patient needs.
