Party's Convention, Held Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, Officially Confirmed Wilson Grassi Júnior As Its Candidate for President

The Democratic Party's convention, held Sunday (2) in Rio de Janeiro, officially confirmed Wilson Grassi Júnior as its candidate for president of Brazil. The vice-presidential slot remains open, pending a decision by the party's National Executive Committee, which is also considering forming a coalition. Born in São Paulo, Grassi Júnior is a veterinarian by training.

He served as an adviser to the São Paulo chapter of the National Association of Small Animal Veterinary Clinicians (Anclivepa-SP) on the project to establish and manage the country's first public hospital for dogs and cats, located in the Tatuapé neighborhood of eastern São Paulo. This is the first convention for the party since it changed its name in December 2025, dropping the Brazilian Women's Party (PMB) label. It is also the first time since its founding in 2008 that the party has fielded a presidential candidate.

Agência Brasil is tracking the results of national party conventions ahead of the 2026 elections. Upcoming candidate confirmations include União Brasil on August 4, and PRD and Solidariedade on August 5. Eight parties have yet to set dates for their national conventions: Avante, Cidadania, Podemos, PP, PSDB, PSOL, Rede, and Republicanos.
