Mcconnell, 84, Has Not Appeared Publicly Since His June 14 Hospitalization, Later Revealed to Stem From a Fall

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said Monday that the August 3 deadline carries no legal weight for his options if a Senate vacancy emerges, pushing back on speculation tied to Mitch McConnell's extended absence. In a post on X, the Democrat wrote, "I want everyone to know that this date has no legal impact on my options should there be a vacancy this year. McConnell, 84, has not appeared publicly since his June 14 hospitalization, later revealed to stem from a fall.

His office said on July 27 that he had not been medically cleared to leave rehabilitation. Beshear has pressed McConnell to prove fitness or resign, and has urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to investigate if needed. Thune told NBC News the matter rests between McConnell and Kentucky voters.

Kentucky law mandates a special election for Senate vacancies, with August 3 marking the three-month cutoff before the November 3 midterms. The statute's application to Senate seats remains untested after a 2024 law ended interim gubernatorial appointments. Beshear, a potential 2028 presidential contender, also criticized Republicans for attacking his absence from a picnic while ignoring McConnell's 50-day disappearance."
