In a video report, SPIEGEL correspondent Serafin Reiber visited Betrawoti, a village in Nepal that has been cut off from the outside world since the disaster struck last Wednesday. "We were only able to get here today with great effort and time, and for the first time get a picture of what this place looks like — a place that has been hit perhaps the hardest by this devastating flash flood. Reiber described the scene: "One can only imagine the force the water must have had when it hit this place with a school, numerous shops, pilgrimage sites and, above all, many residential buildings. We see a school bus over there that has also sunk into the mud.

There is another one further up. One hardly dares to imagine what may have happened to the schoolchildren; there is no reliable information about that yet. The correspondent spoke with a shop owner whose entire house was destroyed.

In a nearby house, Nepalese police recovered the body of a man who died on the roof of his home as the heat subsided on the evening of the visit. Around twenty bodies have been recovered so far, and many more are expected. Reiber noted that little of the rescue effort has reached the village so far.

"The people who managed to get to safety are staying with relatives. The people feel abandoned," he said. And yet one gets an impression of how great the challenges and difficulties must be in providing for the people here. And above all, rebuilding everything here is out of the question at the moment, considering that this place must have been home to well over 3,000 people.
