Spain's Socialist Party Has Criticized Opposition Leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo for Demanding That the Director of the National Intelligence

Feijóo called on Saturday for CNI director Esperanza Casteleiro to testify in the Senate about the illegal entry of thousands of migrants into Ceuta on July 30 and 31, asking when the government was warned, what information was shared, and what it knew before the incident. A similar request filed by Vox in early August, seeking documents including prior communications that might have contained alerts or forecasts about the entry of some 70,000 people into Spain, was also rejected by the Senate's governing board, where the PP holds a majority, on legal grounds. According to the board's ruling, reported by Europa Press, the law regulating the CNI establishes in its article 5.1 that the institution's activities, internal organization, structure, means, procedures, personnel, facilities, bases, data centers, information sources, and any data that could lead to knowledge of these matters constitute classified information with the degree of "secret.

The ruling therefore did not admit Vox's request for a public hearing because it contains classified information, which legally can only be reported through the channels established in article 11 of the law and the Official Secrets Act. Article 11 states that the CNI must submit appropriate information about its functioning and activities to Congress through the committee that oversees funds for reserved expenses, also known as the official secrets committee, and that the content of those sessions and deliberations will be secret. The Socialists attacked Feijóo on social media, saying: "Once again, we have confirmed that Feijóo will return to being leader of the opposition.

New political year, old habits. Some things never change. PSOE organization secretary Rebeca Torró and Secretary of State for Relations with the Courts and Constitutional Affairs Rafael Simancas echoed similar sentiments, with Simancas quipping ironically: He just can't get it right.

Feijóo also announced that the PP will join the judicial case at the National Court regarding the Ceuta crisis. The PSOE noted that the request for Casteleiro's appearance was rejected by the Senate's board, which is dominated by a PP majority. Feijóo has demanded the CNI director's appearance in the Senate to explain the timeline of warnings and information before the mass entry of migrants into Ceuta.
