A Russian drone strike sparked a major fire and explosions in a warehouse containing explosives on the outskirts of Kyiv on Friday evening, killing at least 37 people, Ukrainian authorities said.
The attack occurred shortly after 8 p.m. (5 p.m. GMT) in the village of Myla, in the Bucha district. "Unfortunately, the number of victims in the Bucha district now stands at 37, regional military administration head Timur Tkachenko said on Saturday. "Among the dead is Taras Didych, the mayor of the village of Dmitrivka, he added.
The prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into "negligence" regarding the storage conditions at the site. The inquiry will examine "the legality (...) of the storage of explosives" on the premises, as well as whether the unnamed company involved held the necessary permits. President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a message on X that "ammunition" must not be stored near "residences or other residential areas.
"There are regulations, ammunition cannot be stored near homes or other residential areas. The appropriate conclusions will certainly be drawn, he wrote.
