Using a state-of-the-art radar device employed by the U.S. Air Force, underground scans have detected right-angled cavities and structures resembling ship compartments. Prof. Dr. Cenker Atila, a faculty member of the Archaeology Department at Sivas Cumhuriyet University's Faculty of Letters, leads the project, which has drawn worldwide attention. Atila and 20 scientists from five countries began their work on June 28. The research, launched within the borders of the Doğubayazıt district of Ağrı, utilized advanced underground imaging systems.
In this context, a highly advanced radar device used in U.S. Air Force research was procured, and measurements were conducted under the leadership of Dr. Khosrow Bakhtar. During the studies, various anomalies were discovered underground, including cavities with regular edges. These cavities have led scientists to consider the possibility that they may belong to the ship's compartments, and data has been obtained that could represent the ship's deck.
Project leader Prof. Dr. Cenker Atila stated that the work continues without pause, with new exciting results emerging daily. "Our project started on June 28, 2026. So far, we have completed 3D models, GPS points, and mapping. We also conducted underground radar work with radar systems used by the U.S. Air Force.
This was one of the most important studies for us. Are there cavities, wood remnants, or remains that would form a ship shape underground? This was one of the most important studies we conducted to understand these.
Although we will receive definitive results in 2 months, even the current data has been very important for us," he said. Atila added that exciting developments are occurring. "We noticed many anomalies on the Durupınar formation.
These are cavities. The presence of anomalies intersecting at right angles raised the question: 'Could there have been a ship here, could these be the ship's cavities? At the same time, soil samples were taken and some analyses were conducted.
Our work is currently ongoing. We will take approximately one thousand soil samples. Our aim here is to try to find organic matter.
Research so far has shown that the carbon amount from the ship's inner section is 40 percent higher than that from the outer section. This has raised the idea that there could be organic matter or wood remnants. These studies will reach definitive results within a 2-3 month period.
We will provide more illuminating information then. Current data increases the likelihood that this is Noah's Ark every day," he said. The research continues in the Durupınar formation at the foot of Mount Ağrı.
