Tagovailoa Has Not Had a Strong Training Camp With the Falcons

NFL teams are making calls about trading for four quarterbacks who are looking for a fresh start after a rough training camp, with the preseason set to conclude Saturday and rosters due to be trimmed to 53 players by Sunday's deadline. According to Benjamin Allbright of KOA Colorado, league teams have made calls with "varying degrees of interest" on Atlanta Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Dillon Gabriel (Cleveland Browns), J.J. McCarthy (Minnesota Vikings) and Anthony Richardson (Indianapolis Colts). Richardson stands out most because he sought a trade earlier in the offseason, but the Colts didn't appear to find much interest in the spring.

Indianapolis has failed to find a suitor willing to pay the right price for the 2023 first-round pick, and Colts general manager Chris Ballard didn't want to give Richardson away for nothing. McCarthy, a first-round pick in 2024, could be looking for a fresh start after the Vikings signed veteran quarterback Kyler Murray this offseason. Minnesota gave Murray the starting job during training camp.

Gabriel had a strong dress rehearsal on Thursday night, throwing for three touchdowns in the Browns' win over the New England Patriots in their final preseason game. Deshaun Watson has been named Cleveland's starter in Week 1, with Shedeur Sanders expected to be his backup and could get a chance to start at some point this season. Tagovailoa has not had a strong training camp with the Falcons.

Despite Michael Penix Jr. having missed 11-on-11 periods during training camp due to an injury, the Falcons have not named Tagovailoa the starter for their Week 1 contest at the Pittsburgh Steelers. After Sunday, teams will turn their attention to Week 1 of the regular season.
