China's CCTV Raises Tibet Missing Toll to 558, Including 260 Foreigners

China's state broadcaster CCTV raised the number of missing in neighboring Tibet to 558, including 260 foreigners. The Nepali army said it had rescued 900 people, including in the hardest-hit districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot. Among those rescued were 119 foreigners, 92 of them Indian citizens.

Nepal is a popular destination for mountaineers and trekkers, and thousands of Hindus and Buddhists visit each year to pray at sacred sites. Most of the missing Indians were in the area to visit Mount Kailash, considered the spiritual home of the Hindu god Shiva, near the Nepal-Tibet border in the Himalayas. China said 555 tourists stranded in the region had been evacuated.

India reported 100 citizens missing, the United States 54, and Britain 33. Ukraine's foreign ministry said 53 of its citizens were missing. Turkey's foreign ministry said as of Aug. 26 it had no information on missing Turkish citizens.

Canada reported 24 citizens missing, and Australia at least 34. Rescue work in Tibet resumed after being halted over fears that a lake formed by a landslide could trigger new flooding. Authorities believe the floods were caused by the collapse of a large glacier.
