Sharma First Announced the Codename in March, Using Phrasing That Seemingly Implied a Singular Console

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has revealed that Project Helix, Microsoft's next-generation console initiative, will actually be a "family" of devices rather than a single piece of hardware. Sharma first announced the codename in March, using phrasing that seemingly implied a singular console. "We've been hard at work on a great next generation and a great family of devices for Helix, and we'll share more soon, Sharma told BBC News.
She made the statement after being asked whether Helix would be a discless console, a question she did not directly answer. This week, Microsoft announced a program for digitizing physical games. In 2025, Microsoft and AMD announced a "strategic multi-year partnership" to work together on "a portfolio of devices, including Microsoft's next-generation console, suggesting the two companies are also partnering on the Helix family of devices.
It has been rumored that third parties will be able to sell their own Project Helix devices. Xbox's VP of next generation, Jason Ronald, did not exactly deny the rumor when he wrote: "Project Helix will be available as a 1st party Xbox console. The launch timeline for Project Helix, which will be able to play PC games, remains unclear.
In February, shortly before Sharma's surprise appointment to the top job at Xbox, AMD hinted it would be ready to support a launch of Microsoft's next-generation Xbox in 2027. At a conference in March, Ronald said Helix wouldn't reach alpha until 2027. The full story is available at The Verge. Microsoft's next Xbox console may not be just one piece of hardware.
