Four German nationals have been rescued from the disaster zone in Nepal following the devastating flash floods, according to the dpa news agency and the portal "Onlinekhabar." The group, reportedly a family, was flown by helicopter along with others to an army camp in Battar Bazar, an army spokesman said. The German government said a "low double-digit number of German nationals" were currently missing, though a Foreign Office spokesman said no information could be given on individuals. The ministry is working to clarify the situation.

Earlier, Nepal's tourism authority had spoken of eight missing German nationals. According to dpa, four of them belonged to a group of foreign pilgrims who were returning from a trip to the holy Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet when contact was lost, the Nepalese travel agency Trekkers' Society said. "We have all seen these terrible images, the Foreign Office spokesman said, adding that the full extent of the floods was hard to assess.

"The situation in the affected region is still very, very unclear. On Thursday, the ministry said German authorities on the ground were gathering reliable information on the whereabouts of German nationals. The flash flood on Wednesday destroyed entire villages in the border region between Nepal and Tibet.

The death toll has risen to more than 500, with Nepal's disaster management reporting 538 dead and five deaths in Tibet, according to Chinese state media. More than 1,400 people were still listed as missing, including hundreds of foreigners.
