Rental Crisis Deepens in Istanbul's Student Districts As Prices Soar

A 2+1 apartment in an older building in Beşiktaş that rented for around 25,000 liras a year ago now goes for 45,000 liras per month. Due to central locations and high demand, rents in older buildings can reach up to 80,000 liras depending on the apartment's location, condition and whether it is furnished. According to a report by Türkiye Gazetesi, another danger awaiting students is the "urban transformation" trap.

Some landlords, hoping to capitalize on the fact that urban transformation support is set to end at the end of the year, are reportedly trying to rent out risky buildings slated for demolition to students who are unaware of the situation. Real estate agents are advising students to thoroughly investigate a building's condition before signing a lease. With the start of the registration period at universities, students are gripped by housing anxiety, and experts warn that due diligence is essential to avoid both financial strain and unsafe living conditions.
