Bolaños Testimony on Ceuta Crisis Raises More Questions Than Answers

Spanish Justice Minister Félix Bolaños appeared before Congress to clarify the government's handling of the serious crisis in Ceuta, but his testimony raised more questions than answers, according to an editorial in ABC España. Bolaños denied there was evidence that Morocco orchestrated the mass entry of migrants into the Spanish enclave and went so far as to accuse the opposition of "disrespecting" the neighboring country. The editorial noted that at times his intervention seemed more fitting for a minister of King Mohammed VI than of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

The minister attributed the influx to the misrepresentation on social media of a Supreme Court ruling on border returns. However, he left the essential questions unanswered: why the Justice Ministry he heads did not react to that interpretation, who spread those messages, and what communications the government maintained with Moroccan authorities.
