German Research Centre for Geosciences, the Earthquake Occurred in the Northern Part of Tibet at a Depth of Approximately 10 Kilometers

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Tibet, China's autonomous region bordering Nepal, a day after the area was hit by severe flooding. The quake prompted authorities to issue the highest-level flood alert over concerns that a barrier lake could overflow. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred in the northern part of Tibet at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.

China's state news agency Xinhua reported that a level-5 flood alert was declared due to the risk of a barrier lake in Tibet overflowing. China's Ministry of Water Resources instructed local authorities in the region to closely monitor the situation at the barrier lake and rainfall levels. The China Earthquake Networks Center had earlier announced that a magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck Tibet's Nagqu region the previous day.

Meanwhile, neighboring Nepal is still grappling with the aftermath of a major flood disaster from recent days. A glacial lake outburst in the Himalayas triggered flooding that reached the Bhotekoshi River. Nepal Police reported that the death toll from the disaster has risen to 389, while the Nepal National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 910 people remain missing in the region. The earthquake and flood alerts come as the area faces consecutive natural disasters, with authorities urging vigilance along the Tibet-Nepal border.
