August 12, 2026 Solar Eclipse Caused a Massive Drop in Solar Power Generation Across Europe, With Spain Losing About 5 Gigawatts of Output

The event, which lasted two to three hours from Spain to Iceland, included a two-minute period of total darkness that tested the resilience of electricity grids heavily reliant on photovoltaic systems. According to grid operator Red Eléctrica, Spain's production loss equaled roughly 13 percent of the power needed on a typical August Wednesday, an amount matching the consumption of hundreds of thousands of households. In the UK, major supplier Octopus Energy offered customers one hour of free electricity to encourage reduced consumption during the critical window, helping prevent a feared grid failure.
Unlike ordinary cloudy days, when solar panels can still generate at about 20 percent capacity, the eclipse caused daylight levels to plummet as the environment went completely dark. While such events occur on average twice a year and affect a narrow area, advancing battery technology is helping ensure they no longer pose a threat to the future of green energy. Thanks to producer precautions and consumer cooperation, the worst-case scenarios were avoided. The eclipse was visible across a wide geography stretching from Spain to Iceland, with the total darkness phase lasting two minutes.
