🇺🇸 United StatesUS Deputy Defense Chief: Europe Still of 'Fundamental Interest' Despite Pivot
U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Elbridge Colby on Thursday reaffirmed Washington's commitment to NATO's collective defense, saying Europe remains of "fundamental interest" to the United States even as the American administration now prioritizes the Western Hemisphere and Asia, according to EFE. Speaking in Brussels alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Colby praised the progress European allies have made in recent years in taking responsibility for Europe's defense and in supporting Ukraine. However, while acknowledging Europe's advances in assuming responsibility for its conventional defense, Colby told allies that much work remains ahead of discussions about potential reductions of U.S. troops in Europe.
Let's look at some of the things like access, hosting, overflight. Well, there are a lot of good things, but there are some things we need to resolve for it to make sense to continue, Colby said at NATO headquarters, adding that his visit was in the spirit of consultation, according. In turn, the NATO chief said Thursday's meeting in Brussels was proof that the U.S. is consulting with allies regarding the positioning of its forces in Europe. Colby's remarks come as the Trump administration weighs changes to the U.S. military footprint on the continent, with allies seeking clarity on Washington's long-term posture.
