🇮🇹 ItalyItaly's Mint Unveils Gold Coins Honoring Historic 50 Lire 'Vulcano' in 2026 Series

Italy's state mint has released a new pair of gold coins honoring the historic 50 Lire "Vulcano" coin, part of the "La riedizione della Lira" series in the Italian Republic's 2026 Numismatic Collection. The two coins, denominated at 50 and 20 euros, are struck in 999.9% fine gold with a Reverse Proof finish, combining "iconographic memory and modern aesthetic research" to give collectors "an identity symbol deeply rooted in the country's history, according to a statement. The obverse of both coins features the allegory of Italy with a female face facing right, crowned with oak leaves and surrounded by the legend "Repubblica italiana.
The reverse reinterprets the famous depiction of the god Vulcan, pairing the historic value "L. 50" with the current denomination — "50 euro" on the 50-euro version and "20 euro" on the 20-euro version. The design creates a direct dialogue "between past and present, restoring all the symbolic force of the original coinage. The 50-euro and 20-euro "50 lire coins, issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, were designed by engraver Valerio De Seta and struck by the Zecca dello Stato (State Mint). The series pays tribute to the iconic 50 Lire coin through this dual interpretation, appealing to collectors of Italian numismatics.
