NASA Chief Proposes Orbiting Data Centers to Power AI Boom

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has proposed moving data centers into space to meet the growing energy demands of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. In an interview with Vinay Simot, Washington correspondent for Nexstar Media Group, Isaacman said, "Let's take our data centers and put them into Earth's orbit. Let's take advantage of the free fusion reactor that's waiting for us there, and use it to definitively win both the space and AI race.

The comments were reported by The Hill amid ongoing debates in the US over data centers' energy consumption and environmental impact. Earlier this month, during an appearance on the podcast "Pod Force One, Isaacman described moving data centers to space as a "fantastic solution" that could yield very big benefits. He also noted that industry figures, including SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk, agree on the idea of placing data centers in orbit.

Data centers, whose numbers are rapidly growing with the development of the AI sector, face criticism in the US for driving up electricity prices and harming the environment. Some states have seen calls to temporarily halt the construction of new data centers, while Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin has argued that such steps could hurt the country's AI competition with China. The proposal comes as the energy needs of AI continue to strain power grids across the United States.
