Nine South Koreans Missing After Nepal-tibet Floods Kill at Least 165 in China

At least 160 people have died and 647 remain missing after a catastrophic surge of floodwater, mud and debris swept through Himalayan valleys in Nepal and Tibet, devastating communities on both sides of the China-Nepal border. Nepali authorities reported 391 missing in Nepal, including 291 foreigners, while Chinese state media said 265 were missing in Tibet. Nepal reported 157 deaths, and Chinese state media said three people died in Tibet, bringing the combined death toll to 160. The disaster struck a region of profound religious significance crowded with pilgrims and trekkers heading toward sacred sites.

The route through Rasuwa is used by pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet, revered by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains, while local Nepali pilgrims were trekking toward Gosaikunda Lake for religious observances. More than 100 Indian nationals were among those unaccounted for, alongside visitors from Britain, the United States, Australia, the Netherlands, Malaysia and South Africa. In Tibet, the Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported 265 people missing after a mudslide struck the Gyirong border port, a key crossing between Tibet and Nepal.
