Family-inclusive Mental Health Care Cuts Hospital Admissions by Two-thirds

Involving a patient's family and friends in mental health treatment makes them three times less likely to be admitted to psychiatric hospital, research has found.
Patients rated their recovery and quality of life more highly than those treated traditionally, the study also found. It is the first major study of Open Dialogue, a treatment model that focuses on the patient's priorities, involves consistent clinicians, and includes close family and friends. However, the trial across five NHS trust areas found it did not prevent relapses, and some critics call for further research into its effectiveness.
Dr Nihad Fathi benefited from the approach after his life spiraled out of control as the Covid pandemic took hold in 2020. By the next summer, work-related problems left him anxious, depressed, and worthless. He felt he was letting his clients down. "It was so much pressure, stress," he said.
