The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management recommends families implement an emergency plan that includes: preparing an evacuation route, identifying safe sites, and having an emergency kit with water, flashlight, radio, non-perishable food, and identification documents. During a tremor, authorities advise staying calm and taking cover in structurally safe areas, such as under a desk or near a column, avoiding doors, windows, or objects that could fall. After the quake, it is important to act cautiously, avoid using elevators, refrain from running or pushing others, and stay away from dangerous objects.
Officials also recommend assessing structural damage before re-entering buildings, cutting off basic supplies like gas, water, and electricity if safe to do so, and staying informed through official channels. The report was prepared by Luisa Fernanda Gutiérrez Henao of the Últimas Noticias desk.
