Fransiskushjelpen Backs Call for More Palliative Beds, Dignity in Final Phase of Life

Fransiskushjelpen agrees with Kevin that more palliative hospital beds are needed and that no dying person or their relatives should have to fight for dignity in the final phase of life. The charity notes that while not everyone can die at home, for those for whom home death is both possible and desired, its service — commissioned by Oslo municipality — offers high-competence palliative care. Palliative nurses are on call around the clock, and the organization can also provide day and night shifts at home to relieve relatives and provide security.

Fransiskushjelpen acknowledges that its service does not solve everything, and that patients with complex pain and advanced palliative needs require the specialized institutional places Kevin calls for. The organization has therefore worked to establish a hospice in Oslo, including a citizen proposal to take over an empty municipal building at Smedgata 30.
