The touch-screen MacBook Pro model has been talked about for a long time. A new report says that only Samsung Display will produce the OLED MacBook's panel. According to industry sources, Apple will launch new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED displays and touch features later this year.

The panels will be produced at Samsung Display's Asan facility and feature oxide TF Ts, two-layer tandem structure and in-cell touch capability. Mass production is expected to start around August.

The determining factor seems to be production infrastructure. Apple requested large-area substrate production support. Samsung Display responded with its Gen-8.6 OLED line, while LG Display stated that it will use its existing Gen-6 line.

Although laptop OLED production is possible on 6th generation lines, substrate efficiency and productivity are 8.6. relatively lower than the next generation. Since the initial product volumes were not large, it appears that LG Display entrusted all production to Samsung Display rather than finding multiple suppliers. LG Display supplies the panels for the current LCD-based MacBook and MacBook Pro.

It is also the supplier of OLED panels for the iPad Pro. Preparation is required for mass production of TFT-based RGB OLE Ds for the MacBook Pro. Since LG's current 6th-generation lines are currently used for panels in smartphones and tablets, it's difficult to match the volume of MacBook panels.
