The total amount of water coming to dam power plants across Türkiye increased by 140 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 72.5 billion cubic meters. While hydroelectricity production broke a record in the first half of the year, reaching 57 billion kilowatt-hours, the share of HEP Ps in electricity production exceeded 32 percent. According to data compiled from Türkiye Electricity Transmission Inc.'s Water Reports, as of July 19, the occupancy rate in dams increased to 71.3 percent.
This rate was recorded as 61.4 percent in 2024 and 51.7 percent last year. The total active water amount of all dams across Türkiye was calculated as 72.53 billion cubic meters, according to July data. This amount, which was 30.24 billion cubic meters in the same period last year, revealed that the water entering the dams increased by 139.9 percent compared to last year.
This abundance in water resources was directly reflected in electricity production. Hydroelectric production in the first 6 months of the year increased by 68 percent compared to the same period last year. Hydroelectric production, which was 33.9 billion kilowatt-hours in the first half of last year, reached 57 billion kilowatt-hours in the same period of this year.
With these data, the share of hydroelectric power plants (HEPP) in Türkiye's total electricity production exceeded 32 percent. When the monthly distribution of the amount of water coming to the main basin dams was examined in the report, the increase especially in the spring months attracted attention. While the total amount of water coming to dam power plants in the January-July period was 72.53 billion cubic meters, this figure was 30.24 billion cubic meters last year.
While May was the most fertile month of this year with 19.3 billion cubic meters of water inflow, it was observed that February, April and June provided two to three times more water inflow compared to last year. According to the data in the report, the total amount of water arriving at the main basin dams in the first 19 days of July was 3 billion 436 million 829 thousand cubic meters. Looking at daily data, the highest water inflow was 217.4 million cubic meters on July 1, and the lowest water inflow was 147.2 million cubic meters on July 16. Among the main basin dams benefiting from this abundance of water are critically important facilities such as Keban, Deriner, Altınkaya, Hirfanlı, Boyabat, Oymapınar and Alpaslan-1. In addition, Adıgüzel, Alkumru, Almus, Batman, Demirköprü, Dicle, Ermenek, Garzan, Hasan Uğurlu, Karacaören, Kemer, Kılıçkaya, Kralkızı, Kuzgun, Kandil, Özlüce, Sarıyar, Tercan, Torul, Uzunçayır, Yamula and Yedigöze dams are also listed among the main power plants with increased water efficiency. The amount of water coming to the dams this year surpassed not only the previous year, which was dry, but also the long-term average of 55.93 billion cubic meters.
