The KNMI registered the earthquake. According to the institute, this is an earthquake caused by human activity, in this case gas extraction in Groningen. These types of earthquakes occur less deeply underground and are therefore felt better.

Residents describe the earthquake at RTV Noord as a "short, violent boom", "short, but audible and palpable" and a "bang, followed by a significant vibration". A resident from Froombosch, a village near Sappemeer, saw her table suddenly move and was very shocked by the bang. In Sappemeer, a resident experienced the shock as "a kind of blow".

She heard the door and glass shake. "Everything in the house was shaking, says a local. Since gas extraction in the Groningen field stopped in 2024, the number of earthquakes in the area has decreased."
