Turkey's Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy marked the 955th anniversary of the Battle of Malazgirt with a message on his social media account, honoring Sultan Alparslan and his army. Ersoy said the victory won on August 26, 1071, marked the beginning of a new historical era that changed the destiny of Anatolia. I commemorate Sultan Alparslan and his heroic army, who won an unparalleled victory on these lands 955 years ago, with mercy, gratitude and respect. Happy 955th anniversary of our Malazgirt Victory. The minister's message was published on the anniversary of the battle, a pivotal event in which the Seljuk forces, led by Sultan Alparslan, defeated the Byzantine army and opened the gates of Anatolia to Turkish settlement.
