One person was killed and three others were injured after a gunman allegedly opened fire at a marriage ceremony, known as a "DJ" event, in Kano, Nigeria. The 34-year-old suspect, identified as Rabiu Mukhtar, has been arrested in connection with the incident. The shooting occurred at Tudun Yola on Aug.
16, according to Kano Command's Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa. The suspect allegedly used a pump-action gun to shoot four people at the event, and the weapon was recovered from his possession. The victims were identified as Sadiq Abubakar, Umar Rabiu, Muhammad Sadisu and Aliyu Mustapha.
They were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, for medical treatment. One of the victims, Aliyu Mustapha, later died in the hospital, while the remaining three are responding to treatment. Haruna-Kiyawa said Mukhtar and one other person were apprehended and taken into custody for investigation at the Command Headquarters, Bompai, Kano.
Preliminary information indicated that the incident was triggered by the playing of music that some people did not like. The suspect told police he opened fire after he heard that thugs, known as 'Yan daba, were coming to the venue. The suspects will be prosecuted after the completion of the investigation.
The Kano police spokesperson confirmed the arrest of Mukhtar in connection with the alleged offence. The remaining three victims are currently responding to treatment at the hospital.
