The 31-year-old woman and her daughter died from their injuries at a hospital after emergency responders' attempts to revive them failed. A witness told ABC that the pair had likely just gotten out of their car when the lightning struck and threw them to the ground. The witness reported seeing an orange glow and immediately rushed outside.

The incident remains under investigation. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 90 percent of people survive a lightning strike. Over the past two decades, the U.S. has averaged 26 lightning-related deaths per year, mostly during the summer months, out of a population of more than 340 million.

For comparison, in Germany, the VDE electrical engineering association reports an average of about four deaths per year from lightning, despite hundreds of thousands of strikes annually. The witness described the scene as a tragic loss where help arrived too late for the victims.
