German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed that those responsible for the failed drone attack on Leipzig Airport will pay a price, promising a government response three weeks after the incident. On the evening of August 4, a drone loaded with explosives was discovered at Leipzig Airport and later defused. Several Ukrainian cargo aircraft were nearby. The airport is considered a hub for military aid shipments to Ukraine in its war against Russia.

According to SPIEGEL information, at least one additional drone was deployed in Leipzig, and traces of military-grade explosives were also found near the airport grounds. The government has so far refrained from naming those responsible. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt instead spoke of "foreign powers, adding: Leipzig is not an isolated case, but part of a larger structure we are dealing with. Suspicion currently points to Russia, though the authorship has not been established.
