SA Panel Races to Finish Report Before Sept. 11 Deadline in South Africa

South Africa's Parliament Ad Hoc Committee is under pressure to finalise its draft report ahead of a September 11 deadline to table it before the National Assembly. The committee is investigating concerns of national security following allegations of political interference, corruption and criminal infiltration in the South African Police Service (SAPS). A key issue under debate is whether Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave, acted independently or under external influence when he ordered the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Committee chairperson Soviet Lekganyane defended the decision-making process, saying it was not based solely on submissions from individuals such as Miss Mashale, Miss de Haas, or Mogotsi. He noted that evidence presented to the committee included expenditure reports of the PKTT, and that various other documents and information were considered before the minister made his decision. The committee is meeting this evening to consider its draft report, following allegations made by Lt-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
