Director Lee Chang-dong Returns With His First Film in Eight Years, "Possible Love", a Netflix Original That Premieres at the Venice

South Korean director Lee Chang-dong returns to filmmaking after eight years with "Possible Love, his first Netflix feature, which premieres at the Venice International Film Festival. The film follows a couple of laid-off workers from a large corporation and a documentary filmmaker couple documenting their story. At a production briefing held at a hotel in Seoul's Mapo district on the 25th, Lee appeared alongside stars Jeon Do-yeon, Sol Kyung-gu, Jo Yeo-jeong, and Jo In-sung." Lee explained the title: "An ordinary love story implies in parentheses that the love is hard to achieve, but we ask, as the title says, what love is possible and how we can make love possible.

The project was originally prepared over a decade ago but was shelved. In 2022, Lee made a related short film, "Heartbeat, with Jeon and Sol in the lead roles. Lee said he abandoned the feature because he lacked conviction that a drama was necessary when honest documentaries about laid-off workers already existed, apologizing to the actors who had been confirmed for the project.

The film was revived when co-writer Oh Jung-mi suggested overlapping the laid-off couple's story with another couple's narrative. Sol Kyung-gu, initially unable to join due to scheduling conflicts with the Netflix series Deuljwi, stayed up three nights to seek the production team's understanding and secure his participation.
