Nevada Reported Progress Tuesday Against Fast-spreading Wildfires Near Reno, But Confirmed That Dozens of Homes Have Been Destroyed

The so-called "Hawk Fire" in a hilly region on the edge of the city is now 27 percent contained, authorities said. According to initial findings, the flames destroyed 32 homes and damaged six others, with those numbers expected to rise, Fire Chief Richard Edwards warned. The fire has been spreading rapidly since Saturday and has scorched more than 6,000 hectares.

Seven people, including three firefighters, were injured, according to officials. At the height of the emergency, 42,000 residents were ordered to evacuate, and another 45,000 were told to prepare to leave their homes. By Tuesday, only 23,000 residents remained under evacuation orders.

Authorities said the fire was human-caused but provided no further details. An investigation is ongoing. The blaze has prompted a massive emergency response in the region.
