Construction has begun on a new rent-controlled housing project on city-owned land near Toronto's Trinity Bellwoods Park, a development expected to bring 74 new homes to the area. On Monday, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow joined federal officials at the site to mark the milestone. The city says many of the new homes will feature two or three units, offering options for families.

"Today, we're turning City-owned land into new rental housing, including affordable and family-sized homes, Chow said. "By working with Build Canada Homes, we're building the housing Toronto needs so people who work here can afford to live here. Together, we're delivering a more affordable and caring city for everyone.

The project is being built on a former city-owned parking lot, with work led by Toronto's CreateTO division. Funding from the federal government's Build Canada Homes program is helping to deliver the development. The city did not provide a timeline for when the homes would be completed.
