For the second day in a row, a drone has invaded Romanian airspace. An F-16 fighter jet shot down the unmanned aircraft over uninhabited areas near the border with Ukraine. This is reported by the Romanian Ministry of Defense.

The airspace violation was noticed at 8:22 am, after which two F-16s were deployed. The ministry did not reveal where the drone came from. Romania is a member of NATO and a member of the European Union since January 1, 2007.

Yesterday morning a drone was also spotted in Romania. It was then shot out of the sky near Padina, northeast of the capital Bucharest. The origin of that drone is still being investigated, but according to Romanian researchers it appeared to be a Shahed drone, an Iranian-designed type that Russia is using in the war against Ukraine.

It is the first time that Romania itself has actively shot down unmanned aircraft. Since the Russian invasion in 2022, Russian and Ukrainian drones have entered Romanian airspace dozens of times. Russia has been carrying out attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube, which partly flows through Romania, for years.

Deadly attacks on both sides Meanwhile, attacks between Russia and Ukraine continue. Eight people were killed today in a Ukrainian attack on a summer camp in the partially Russian-occupied Zaporizhia region, Moscow-appointed officials said. Ukraine has not yet responded. Authorities in the northeastern Ukrainian region of Sumy report that three people were killed in a Russian drone strike last night.
