🇺🇸 United StatesOlivia Rodrigo Releases 'Serena Joy' After Cd-only Debut at Indie Shop

Olivia Rodrigo has officially released 'Serena Joy' on all streaming platforms, days after debuting the track exclusively on CD at a single indie record shop. The song will also be performed at her upcoming inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival. The track, inspired by The Handmaid's Tale, features jubilant Devo-like synths and is sonically similar to 'Expectations' from her album Guts.
Lyrics include 'If they do it to them/They'll do it to you. Rodrigo co-wrote the song with longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, who also produced it. In a recent video interview with ETalk, Rodrigo said 'Serena Joy' was initially recorded for Guts but was ultimately cut from the album.
'I actually really love that song, she said. 'It didn't fit on the record. The record was very much a chronicle of a relationship — beginning, middle and end.
And that song didn't really fit in the story I was trying to tell. But I hope that it'll be a part of something else down the line. The exclusive CD was only available at Tustin, California's Analog Music Shop, located seven-and-a-half miles from the festival site at Irvine's Great Park.
