Injuries to Supporters Do Not Trigger That Rule in Türkiye

Seven Cambuur supporters were injured by fireworks thrown by Feyenoord fans during yesterday's match, not five as previously reported, SC Cambuur announced on Sunday. The Dutch football association (KNVB) called the events 'terrible' in a statement but said it will not change its protocols for stopping a match in the event of a fireworks incident. Fireworks were set off from the Feyenoord away section during the match in Leeuwarden, with the projectiles landing on the pitch and in adjacent home sections.

The game was halted for half an hour before being played to completion, with Feyenoord winning 2-5. Referee Danny Makkelie explained to ESPN that under current protocol, a match is only definitively abandoned if officials, players, or staff members are injured. Injuries to supporters do not trigger that rule. "The protocol that was mentioned in the media in this context only concerns safety on the field for players, staff, and officials, the KNVB wrote.

"That domain is the responsibility of the referee and the professional football competition board. Other parties are also responsible for safety in and around the stadium. Agreements in this area are made jointly. In the event of incidents, it is decided on a case-by-case basis and after joint consultation which actions are taken, based on the information known at that time.
